The Basics

What is programmatic DOOH?

DOOH — digital out-of-home — is any out-of-home ad shown on a digital screen: a digital billboard on the freeway, a screen in a subway station, a display in a gym, bar, office lobby, or shopping mall. Programmatic DOOH is how those screens are bought — not with a phone call and an insertion order, but automatically, through software, using audience data to decide when and where your ad plays.

In practice it works like the programmatic buying you already know from digital: you (or your agency) use a demand-side platform to set an audience, budget, and rules, and the system serves your creative to matching screens in real time. The difference is the “device” is a 48-foot bulletin or a screen a thousand people walk past an hour — a shared, public canvas rather than a private phone.

That combination — the scale and credibility of out-of-home with the targeting and flexibility of digital — is why programmatic DOOH is the fastest-growing corner of the OOH market. For the wider category, see our guide to digital outdoor advertising.

How It Works

How programmatic DOOH actually works

Four moving parts turn “a screen on a street” into a targeted, measurable media buy.

01

Demand-Side Platform

A DSP (e.g. Vistar Media, Place Exchange, The Trade Desk) is where the campaign is set up — audience, budget, markets, screens, and rules.

02

Exchange & Supply

The DSP connects to SSPs and media owners, where digital screen inventory across the country is made available to buy.

03

Real-Time Decisioning

For each play, the system checks the rules — location, time, audience, triggers — and decides whether your ad should run on that screen, right then.

04

Serve & Measure

Your creative plays, a verified impression is counted, and exposure can be tied to footfall, site visits, or online conversions.

Inventory is transacted a few different ways: the open exchange (bid on impressions in real time), private marketplace (PMP) deals (negotiated access to specific premium screens), and programmatic guaranteed (locked volume on a set of screens, bought through the pipes). A good agency picks the right mix per campaign — you don’t have to know the plumbing.

Targeting

What you can target with programmatic DOOH

This is what separates programmatic DOOH from booking a static board for a month. The buy reacts to the real world.

01

Location

Down to specific screens, neighborhoods, or a radius around your stores, venues, or competitors.

02

Audience

Aggregated, privacy-safe mobile-location data lets you weight screens toward the audiences you want to reach.

03

Time & Daypart

Run only at the hours and days that matter — commute windows, lunch, weekends, event nights.

04

Triggers

Fire creative on real-world conditions — weather, temperature, pollen, sports scores, flight status, inventory.

Static OOH books a location for a month. Programmatic DOOH buys a moment.
Programmatic vs. Traditional

Programmatic DOOH vs. a traditional OOH buy

Both have their place — and the strongest campaigns use both. Here’s how they differ.

Pricing note: programmatic DOOH is sold on a CPM (cost per thousand impressions) basis, so budgets scale up or down cleanly. For static and digital billboard rate ranges, see our guide to how much a billboard costs.

Inventory

Where programmatic DOOH runs

“Digital out-of-home” spans far more than roadside billboards — it’s screens everywhere people are.

DOOH + Digital

DOOH that’s wired into the rest of your media

Programmatic DOOH gets far more powerful when it’s not run in isolation. Because DASH TWO is also a full-service digital agency, we close the loop.

01

Mobile Retargeting

Re-reach the devices that were exposed to your screens — on social and the open web.

02

Unified Audiences

Use the same audience definitions across DOOH, programmatic display, and social.

03

Data Triggers

Sync creative to sales, weather, or streaming/ticketing data in real time.

04

Attribution

Connect screen exposure to footfall, site visits, and conversions — and prove lift.

DIY DSP vs. Agency

Run it yourself, or have an agency run it

You can license a self-serve DOOH platform and run it in-house. Most brands find the strategy, setup, and optimization eat the time programmatic was supposed to save.

FAQ

Programmatic DOOH FAQ

What is programmatic DOOH?

Programmatic DOOH is the automated buying of digital out-of-home advertising — digital billboards and screens — through demand-side platforms, using audience data to control when and where each ad plays. It brings the targeting and flexibility of digital media to public screens.

How is programmatic DOOH different from a traditional billboard buy?

A traditional buy books a specific board for a set period at a flat rate. Programmatic DOOH is bought on a CPM basis through software, can run in flexible flights (hours or days, not just 4-week cycles), and can target by audience, daypart, location, and real-world triggers.

How much does programmatic DOOH cost?

It’s priced on a CPM (cost per thousand impressions) basis, so budgets scale cleanly from a single market to national. Actual CPMs vary by screen type, market, audience, and format. For static and digital billboard rate ranges, see our billboard cost guide, or ask us for a custom plan.

What can you target?

Location (down to specific screens or a radius), audience (via privacy-safe aggregated mobile-location data), time and daypart, and real-world triggers like weather, temperature, sports scores, or inventory levels.

What counts as DOOH inventory?

Any digital out-of-home screen: digital billboards and bulletins, transit and subway screens, airport displays, retail and mall screens, and place-based networks in gyms, bars, offices, and convenience stores.

Do I need my own DSP to run programmatic DOOH?

No. You can license a self-serve platform, but most brands run it through an agency. DASH TWO operates the DSPs, plans the audiences and screens, builds the creative, and integrates DOOH with your social, search, and static OOH — so it’s one campaign, not a silo.
